In certain instances, family interventions and couples counselling are also required. When a patient doesn’t take medication as prescribed, counsellors establish why they don’t take their medication. Reasons can include substance abuse or traditional beliefs. Counsellors emphasise the importance of taking medication and offer practical advice to encourage adherence.
Education and counselling by the counselling team at CHRU has played an important role in reducing stigma within communities about diseases and about participating in clinical trials.
