Communities central to clinical trials
Communities are central to the success of the studies undertaken by the Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU).
Most clinical trial participants live close to CHRU’s four clinical research sites. Each site has a Community Advisory Board (CAB) which:
Ensures that participants are protected, informed and engaged,
Are trained in clinical advances in the prevention and treatment of diseases and
Support scientists by sharing study results with participants and communities.
Scientists support the CABs to forge strong relations with communities.

CHRU has active CABs that promote community engagement and educate community members about our clinical trials. CHRU has managed to retain participants in clinical trials above 95%. The CAB provides health education to communities with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS, TB and prevalent cancers like cervical cancer.
