The Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) is an internationally recognised multi-disciplinary clinical trial unit involved with breakthrough research that contributes to national (South Africa) and global scientific agendas and public health priorities.
CHRU is involved in:
Global multi-centre clinical trials and
Academic research and technical assistance ranging from Phase I to IV clinical trials and including implementation sciences.

CHRU’s main research focus is on:
HIV and HIV-related comorbidities,
TB prevention, treatment and vaccine trials,
COVID-19 vaccine and treatment trials and

Our Research
Responding to South Africa’s HIV and TB burden
South Africa has one of the highest HIV and Tuberculosis (TB) burdens in the world with an estimated 8.45 million people living with HIV. About one-third of TB patients live with HIV.

Areas of scientific research
Areas of scientific research include:
Testing the safety and efficacy of manufacturers’ new drugs,
Strategy trials which compare different regimens of registered drugs and patterns of HIV drug resistance,
Drug interactions between TB and HIV medicines, and overlapping toxicities,
Defining the role of novel diagnostic tests targeting the early diagnosis of TB,
Antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence and improvements in loss-to-follow-up,
Patterns of viral hepatitis and HIV co-infection, genotyping and drug resistance,
Patterns of human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical dysplasia and cervical cancers including early diagnosis and treatment options and outcomes,
Investigational drug studies for both new and drugs still awaiting registration,
Monoclonal antibodies in the HIV Cure agenda,COVID-19 treatment and vaccines,
Shortened TB treatment regimens and TB vaccines
Investigational drug studies for drug-resistant TB in infants, children and adolescents and
Pharmacokinetic studies of drug-resistant TB medicines in pregnancy.
Clinical trials are also conducted on behalf of pharmaceutical companies which involve testing the efficacy of the manufacturers’ new drugs.
